Charles has been in and out of the prison system for 20 years, but after his last stint he was introduced to Will and he had a way to channel his desire to take a new path.  He joined Clean Decisions soon after, quickly moving into a management role, and then moved into roles outside the company, working security and doing glass installations.  However, Charles had a desire to give back, so he rejoined Changing Perceptions as a Navigator as the program launched in early 2016.  He now works full-time as a Navigator, while also working with the other Navigators to launch their own glass production business.

Charles’ view is that “you need to want to change.”  He does everything he can to support an individual, just as Will did for him as a Navigator (and now good friend).  Charles credits Changing Perceptions’ ability to “develop and foster trust” in what he describes as his family as the reason the program was ultimately successful for him.
As Charles is the Navigator for 8-10 returning citizens himself, he hopes to build this same sense of community and family-like atmosphere for them as was built for him.  It means a lot to him to have this opportunity.  In his words- “It means a lot to get a chance to help people.  I just want to do everything we can to strengthen everyone as (Will and the program) did for us.”  One of the things that helps Charles look toward others is being more financially secure than when he first got out.  Being financially independent through hard but honest work is something Charles takes great pride in, and is a focus with him for those he navigates.
Overall, Charles is focused on the concept of “paying it forward” with those he serves, but is also clear with them that he’s there to support- they have to want to succeed, and only they can ultimately do so.

Charles Binion’s desire to be a Navigator stems from his desire to give back to a city he feels he hurt previously in his life. He wants to help make DC stronger, and amidst all the changes occurring in our city also ensure that there is a place for everyone. He’s therefore passionate about ensuring that returning citizens have a path toward economic viability, as well as that they know they are seen, respected, and valued, even in a city with such quickly changing demographics.
